Talks on Safety
During the 2017 programme involving talks on electrical safety for households, institutions and commercial establishments, Enel Distribución Perú continued with the initiative to promote a safety and prevention culture among the residents of the districts located in the concession area to reduce the electrical hazards at home and public electrical accidents. 87 people participated in the talk conducted in Canta Valley, an area affected by the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon.
Health Campaigns
We carried out free health campaigns for customers within our concession area, reaching 457 beneficiaries; we provided them with ophthalmology, general medicine and dentistry services.
Microinsurance
In 2017, we expanded our microinsurance offers with suitable products through alliances with the most recognised insurers in the Peruvian market. Pacífico, Rímac and Mapfre joined this initiative, expanding insurance offers for our customers, under the umbrella of Enel Seguros. In this way, we provide our customers with the opportunity to meet their health prevention needs with innovative products and accessible premiums. By the end of 2017, we reached more than 27,000 affiliations by more than 200,000 customers, a figure that represents 14% of all our customers.
Inclusion and Solidarity
Receipts in Braille
We print receipts in braille to facilitate communication with our consumers with visual impairment.
Light of Hope
In order to help find missing children and elders, we maintain an agreement with the National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Civil Association Sinacoop ‘Friends of the National Police’; we included photographs of children and elderly people missing in more than 1,300,000 invoices that we print monthly.
Corporative Volunteering
Four professionals from Enel Distribución Perú share their knowledge and experience in their free time as volunteer teachers in the Industrial Electrotechnics degree of the Pachacútec Technological Institute, working for a total of 500 hours and benefiting more than 90 students during 2017. Furthermore, during the ravages of the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon, workers got together to collaborate in favour of the victims providing non-perishable food, water, diapers and personal cleaning items, which were distributed in the most affected areas of the highlands and northern Lima. In addition, Enel Group promoted among its 70,000 collaborators in the world, a global chain of solidarity for Peru, managing to raise, along with the contribution of Enel Cuore, [1] 400 thousand dollars.
With that amount, an agreement was signed with Cáritas del Perú to develop productivity projects so as to improve the value chain of the main agricultural crops from the families of Callahuanca’s and Barbablanca’s communities, which were affected by landslides. This project will be implemented for two years and will promote the decent employment and agricultural competitiveness among 244 families from the three districts of the province of Huarochirí.
Finally, in December, a group of workers organised a Christmas event for 140 elders of the ‘San Vicente de Paúl’ Asylum located in the centre of Lima, donating clothing, diapers, wet wipes, among other items.

Itinerant Health Campaigns - Junín
We carried out 3 itinerant health campaigns, in coordination with the Health Network of Chanchamayo. They counted on the participation of specialists in paediatrics, internal medicine, psychology, dentistry, gastroenterology and gynaecology. Thanks to these campaigns, 346 people were treated for free in the localities near the hydroelectric power plants of Yanango and Chimay. In addition, 8 cases of cervical cancer were detected and treated opportunely.
Comprehensive Health Programme - Junín
This programme, which addresses children’s health, is intended to eradicate anaemia and malnutrition. Haemoglobin levels are monitored, anthropometric measurements of the children are made and medical attention and periodic treatment are offered.
Enel Generación Perú built and equipped 5 doctor’s offices and added services of nursing and dentistry in the communities of Los Ángeles, Las Orquídeas, Yanayacu, Marancocha and Unión Condorbamba; located in the Tulumayo river basin. During 2017, the programme carried out: 1,558 medical appointments, 673 home visits to offer advice on food safety and 480 dental care appointments.
We reduced cases of acute respiratory infections by 24%, cases of anaemia by 100% and cases with risk of malnutrition by 58%. In addition, the interventions are complemented with guidance on equality of rights, the prevention of violence against women and household health. In coordination with the local educational institutions, we delivered 14,153 protein-rich food meals for school students and reinforced these meals with frozen meat of guinea pig (rich in protein and low in fat) that was provided by the participants of the Productivity Programme for the Breeding of Guinea Pigs.
Furthermore, in partnership with the Health Network of Chanchamayo, we broadcasted 30,674 radio spots in 7 local radios of Chanchamayo, with messages related to mental health, prevention of teenage pregnancy, healthy diet and awareness about the prevention of violence against women.
Rural Infrastructure Improvement
We drive the sustainable development of low-income communities near our operation area through basic infrastructure, in line with our Creating Shared Value Policy
Maintenance of Rural Roads - Junín
Thanks to the coordinated work of the community and the company’s fuel contribution, we managed to open a 3-km path to provide access to the Unión Condorbamba community, located in ‘San Cristóbal de Marancocha’ rural community, from the San Pedro bridge. The work benefited 17,210 inhabitants of the nearby communities who use this rural path as a means of communication.
Improvement of School Infrastructure - Junín
Within the framework of the inter-institutional cooperation agreement signed with the Municipality of Vítoc, we built a classroom for the non-formal pre-school education programme in the community of La Florencia and improved the learning conditions of 7 girls and boys who did not have a suitable place to study.
Construction of Sports Infrastructure - Junín
As part of the Environmental Impact Study’s commitments of the Curibamba Hydroelectric Power Plant project, we built 2 sports concrete pitches in the towns of Marancocha and Unión Condorbamba, which are part of the rural community of San Cristóbal de Marancocha. In this way, we have benefited 245 people in the community who did not have sports and recreational areas.
Rehabilitation of Puente Verde Bridge – Lima
The Santa Eulalia Valley is very important for Lima as it is a source of food, as well as an important destination for domestic tourism. For this reason, when the Puente Verde bridge, which links 9 districts and 14 rural communities of the valley, was affected by the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon, Enel Generación Perú cooperated in the provisional restoration of this road. With the support of the Regional Government of Lima and the District Association of the Santa Eulalia Valley, we delivered a thousand gallons of oil for the restoration of roads in the stretches of Lúcuma Seca, Huinco, Autisha and Sheque.
Inclusion and Solidarity
Support for population affected by the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon
In the face of the disasters caused by the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon in March 2017, we carried out a series of volunteer activities and humanitarian aid, focused on the affected population near our power plants.
The most affected residents were those of the community of Barba Blanca, who were isolated and whose houses were covered by mud. Enel Generación Perú recovered the bridge in record time and organised the cleaning and removal of debris in public areas such as the main avenue and the public buildings like educational centres and the medical post, eliminating around 3,420 m³ of mud. We attended the immediate emergency by air, transferring essential items such as food, water, tents, blankets, diapers and medicine to meet the basic needs of isolated people.
The months after the emergency, our support continued with food and water, and we established a work plan to recover the quality of life of the affected population, which was temporarily located in an area ceded by the Purunhuasi community. This plan included the following lines of action:
- Health: We guaranteed free medical attention: every fifteen days a doctor and a nurse evaluated and treated the residents, as well as provided advice on the prevention of diseases. In 2017, 357 medical appointments were performed. Besides, in coordination with the Health Micro-network of Huarochirí, we conducted the fumigation of places of risk and placed containers for waste segregation.
- Infrastructure: We installed a water catchment system with capacity for 2,500 litres and a chlorination system to prevent diseases. We also built a module for the soup kitchen, covered with fire-resistant material and equipped with a kitchen hood, sinks, and furniture to store the kitchen ingredients; all of this connected to water supply and sewerage systems. We supported the improvement of the wooden houses delivered by a charitable organisation, placing mosquito nets in windows, adjusting doors and sealing the joints to prevent the entry of insects and little animals. We worked with the irrigation councils involved with Huinco and Callahuanca power plants for the recovery of 2-km shared channels. To this end, we delivered pipes, cement and other materials necessary for the restoration of channels.
- Education: We improved the provisional school infrastructure and game rooms by implementing cement floors and reinforcement beams, as well as delivering furniture, school supplies and computers. The execution of the plan required coordination with local and regional governments, local civil defence authorities, the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
Another affected area was the district of Lurigancho, in Chosica, where the channels were interrupted by landslides and floods, leaving the district without water. In coordination with the Labour Union for the Drinking Water in Pachacútec (UTAPP), we provided drinking water for two months using 256 tanks aimed at the population living between Moyopampa and Huampaní power plants.
Furthermore, as part of the National Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy (SNMPE), we helped assist one thousand affected families in San Antonio de Pedregal and Carapongo, in Chosica. We also contributed with the delivery of 1,000 disposable respirators, 1,500 shovels, and 5.7 tons of PVC boots for different affected areas in the country.
Project for the value chain improvement of the main agricultural crops from the affected families in Callahuanca
In response to the emergency caused by the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon, Enel Group launched throughout its operations around the world the ‘Enel for Peru’ campaign to raise the voluntary contribution of the Group's employees and carry out a project to promote the social progress of affected communities. The campaign managed to raise more than 400,000 dollars, thanks to the contributions of Enel employees and Enel Cuore.
This fund has been used for the execution of a productivity project in the district of Callahuanca and the community of Barba Blanca, in the province of Huarochirí, thereby benefiting 200 agricultural families. This productivity project will last for two years, during which the agricultural competitiveness of the main crops’ value chains in the area ―avocado, custard apple and vegetables― will be increased.
Health and Prevention
Itinerant Health Campaigns
As part of Enel Generación Piura's commitment to the community’s well-being, we carried out 3 preventive health campaigns, which made possible to perform 407 medical appointments for people from many communities and gave them medicines for free. These activities were performed by professionals from the Ministry of Health specialised in general medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics, psychology, ophthalmology.
Preventing is Health
Anaemia is the biggest enemy of Peruvian children, for this reason, Enel Generación Piura started a nutrition campaign aimed at children of ‘Santa Helena’ Educational Institution. The initiative began by establishing a baseline with a medical check-up. 14 of the 76 children who participated in the programme were diagnosed with anaemia, and 10 of them had a level of haemoglobin below 7.1. After working with parents to improve their children’s diet, they were evaluated every two months to follow their evolution. By the end of 2017, we were pleased to say that children overcame the disease.
Vaccinating is Preventing
One of the main problems of ‘Las Piedritas’ community is the lack of vaccination among children under 5 years old and not attending constantly the programmes of Healthy Child Control offered by the national health system. For this reason, we work together with the Ministry of Health to carry out two vaccination campaigns.
Inclusion and Solidarity
‘Take care of yourself’ Programme
Programme that seeks to reduce family violence, by encouraging women to change and improve their self-esteem in order to promote respect for their rights. During 2017, in partnership with the Emergency Centre for Women (CEM) of Talara, management unit of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, and SENATI, we developed eco-furniture programmes that allowed 15 women to learn a trade that enhances their economic independence.
Christmas Campaign
During the Christmas holidays we brought joy to 1,527 children from the educational institutions of northern Talara, by delivering toys, candies, fruitcake and chocolate. In addition, we organised, like every year, a Christmas show for the children of ‘Las Piedritas’ community and the students of ‘Santa Elena’ Educational Institution, with children's cartoon characters and toys.
