At Enel Distribución Perú, we are aware that climate change is a problem that concerns us all. For that reason, we always consider the care for the environment in our work.
Enel Week in MALI: “10 days to explore”
Under the motto “10 days to explore”, this programme sought to make visitors of the Lima Art Museum (MALI) aware of the relevance of sustainability through art and culture; the attendees participated in different activities such as movie and theatre performances, artistic workshops and, most importantly, the Nazca Culture exhibition.
The 2017 programme made possible for 37,894 people to visit MALI for free, promoting sustainable transport through the exhibition and test of electric bikes in a friendly circuit; this activity offered an entertaining experience to visitors.
Enel Generación Perú supported our trip to the city of Junín to conduct awareness talks on the care for the environment and the natural resources of their communities.
Talks on Forest Protection – Junín
Although 57% of Peru’s territory is made of forest, not many people understand the importance of preserving this renewable natural resource, its impact on the country’s biological diversity and its role in climate regulation through carbon capture.
To change this, we promoted awareness workshops in Junín about the burning of tropical and moist rainforests and its negative effect on the local ecosystem. These talks were organised together with the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) and the Committee for Public Safety of the District of Vítoc.
The programme also reached educational centres of the district of Vítoc, where Enel Generación Perú organised drawing and painting activities for students in order to promote preservation and care of biodiversity. At the end of the event, participants committed to spread what they had learned in their communities.
Enel Generación Piura also promotes programmes in favour of environmental sustainability.
Talks on the Environment
In the middle of 2017, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, we conducted a talk on waste segregation and the environmental problems in the city of Talara aimed at children of “Santa Elena” Educational Institution. The objective was to promote the care for the environment and prevent bad habits such as dropping litter on the street. In addition, we seeded saplings at the school. Furthermore, we organised a second talk aimed at the northern community in the concrete pitch of ‘Las Peñitas’ Shantytown, in which community leaders participated and we delivered 40 saplings to each neighbourhood committee.
‘Olitas Verdes’ Programme
In the northern coast of Peru, in Talara, people performed activities such as tourism, traditional fishing and water sports like surfing. In addition, it is a significant part of the ecosystem as it is the last habitat of endangered birds like the Peruvian plantcutter.
However, there was a problem with litter on streets, that is why Enel Generación Piura has been raising awareness about this issue for two years through workshops aimed at residents of ‘Las Peñitas’ Shantytown. By educating young people, we make sure they value and take care of Las Peñitas beach so residents of the northern part of Talara can enjoy it.
To accomplish this, we formed the “green team”, which was in charge of cleaning the gorge. Furthermore, we supported workshops on nutrition, composting, recycling of organic and inorganic material, construction of ecological walls, recycling and creation of a collection centre to facilitate the picking up of garbage by authorities.
Turning Piedritas into a Green Community
This project, which is currently under its initial research stage, is part of our activities to drive sustainability in the community. We train residents on the promotion of forestation with native species and ecotourism, particularly, the appreciation of flora and fauna such as the Plantcutter, endangered bird native to Peru.
The project started with the funds granted by Malacas Power Plant after winning the contest entitled ‘Beneficiaries of the Global Awards Prizes - Excellence award 2016’ organised by Enel Group in alliance with EcoSwell; the award laid the foundations to generate an environmental shared-value activity.
